Distributor

Distributing the coffee evenly is one of the most important steps when preparing espresso. A coffee distributor is a tool used to spread the ground coffee evenly in the portafilter before tamping.

It helps to remove uneven areas that could cause the water to flow incorrectly through the coffee (this is called channeling). By doing this, it improves the taste and quality of the final drink.

The distributor has either a fixed or an adjustable height. When placed on the portafilter, it is rotated to level the coffee and prepare a smooth surface for tamping.
