Brand: Varia
Description

The Varia VS4 by Varia Brewing is a premium electric single-dose coffee grinder designed to grind individual, pre-weighed doses. Its wide adjustment range makes it suitable for espresso and alternative brewing methods, from moka pot and AeroPress to pour-over, French press and cold brew. Grind size and burr speed can be adjusted independently, allowing the grinder to be tailored to a particular coffee and recipe.

At its core are 53 mm Supernova conical burrs, a 200 W brushless motor and a planetary gearbox with metal gears. The removable single-piece grinding chamber, active ionisation and included bellows help reduce retention, static and mess during grinding. A robust metal body, dual-bearing driveshaft and precise stepless adjustment make the VS4 suitable for demanding home baristas who want to prepare both espresso and filter coffee without using two separate grinders.

Key features of the VS4 coffee grinder Varia:

  • 53 mm Supernova conical burrs – the steel burr set covers fine espresso grinding as well as coarser settings for filter coffee. Its geometry is designed to support grind uniformity and a clean flavour profile across different brewing methods.
  • Stepless grind adjustment – the adjustment collar has no fixed clicks, allowing the grind setting to be changed without being restricted to predefined steps. Each scale division represents approximately 10 μm of mechanical movement, providing fine control over espresso flow and extraction time.
  • Wide grinding range – the VS4 is suitable for espresso, moka pot, AeroPress, pour-over, drip coffee, French press and cold brew. A single grinder can therefore serve several brewing methods.
  • Independent adjustment mechanism – the internal adjustment thread is separate from the hopper attachment. This design helps prevent unintended setting movement, thread wear and incorrect component installation.
  • Zero-point micro-calibration – a five-position system in the outer burr carrier allows the zero point to be mechanically shifted by approximately ±20 μm. It can be used to fine-tune burr positioning and compensate for changes resulting from extended use.
  • 200 W brushless motor – provides sufficient power for fine espresso grinding and dense, lightly roasted beans. Its brushless design supports smooth operation, lower vibration and reduced mechanical wear.
  • Planetary gearbox with metal gears – transfers motor power to the burrs and increases the available torque at low speeds. It helps maintain stable grinding speed when the grinder is under greater load.
  • Adjustable speed from 150 to 300 RPM – burr speed can be adapted to the coffee and brewing method. It can influence the grinding process, the proportion of fine particles and the resulting flavour profile.

The Varia VS4 is designed for demanding home users who want one precisely adjustable grinder for espresso and filter coffee. Its main strength is the combination of stepless grind adjustment, variable speed, stable drive performance and a design focused on low retention. It is particularly well suited to users who regularly switch between coffees and recipes and want greater control over the grinding process.

  • Stable RPM under load – according to the manufacturer’s testing, speed deviation remains within ±1.5% across the full range. Stable drive performance supports repeatability from one dose to the next.
  • Single-dose hopper with an approximate 30–40 g capacity – designed for one pre-weighed dose. It makes switching between coffees easier because there is no large hopper to empty.
  • Single-piece, low-retention grinding chamber – CNC-machined from a single block of alloy with anodised internal surfaces. The continuous grounds path reduces the number of places where ground coffee can collect.
  • 76.5° sloped design – directs beans towards the burrs and creates a near-vertical path for ground coffee into the dosing cup. This arrangement supports smoother grounds movement and reduces residual coffee inside the grinder.
  • Electrodynamic Flow Geometry – the internal chamber surfaces are shaped to guide ground coffee smoothly towards the outlet. Together with the anodised finish, this helps reduce adhesion, clumping and residue build-up.
  • Active ionisation against static electricity – the integrated system helps neutralise static charge generated during grinding. This reduces grounds sticking to the chute, limits clumping and keeps the surrounding area cleaner.
  • Bellows for clearing retained grounds – after grinding, the silicone bellows can be used to purge the chamber and grounds path. This helps move remaining coffee into the dosing cup.
  • Removable grinding chamber with bayonet attachment – the quick-release system allows the hopper and chamber module to be removed without tools. It provides easier access to the burrs and internal components during cleaning.
  • Grinding chamber safety interlock – unlocking the bayonet mechanism interrupts the electrical circuit between the motor and grinding chamber. The grinder can only operate when the module is installed and locked correctly.
  • Dual-bearing drive shaft – two bearings stabilise the shaft and maintain burr concentricity under load. The rigid support reduces axial movement and vibration.
  • Magnetic 58 mm dosing cup – collects ground coffee and makes it easier to transfer into a portafilter. Its magnetic base helps keep it correctly positioned beneath the chute.
  • Thermal protection – an internal sensor monitors the temperature of the motor and control electronics. If the drive system overheats, the grinder can temporarily pause operation.
  • Automatic stop when the chamber is empty – if the grinder no longer detects coffee beans, it switches off automatically after approximately 20 seconds.
  • Compact metal body – the body is primarily made from aluminium alloy and stainless steel. Its 5.27 kg weight provides stability, while its width of 97.7 mm helps save counter space.
